What is Escalation?

Escalation is the transfer of an incident to additional or more senior responders when the current responder cannot resolve it within an expected window. It exists so that no incident stalls silently on one person.

Escalation runs on two triggers. Time based escalation fires automatically when an alert is not acknowledged or an incident is not resolved within a defined window, and it protects against a responder being asleep, unavailable, or overwhelmed.

Judgment based escalation is initiated by the responder, who determines they need specialist knowledge, additional hands, or authority to make a decision such as a regional failover. Healthy incident cultures make this cheap and blameless, because the alternative is an engineer struggling alone to avoid looking incapable.

Cultural friction is the other failure mode. If escalating is treated as an admission of inadequacy, responders will delay it well past the point where it would have helped. The single most effective change most teams can make is stating explicitly that escalating early is correct behavior.
